LEH: Ladakh police has banned the use of sirens and multi-toned horns by the motorcade and escort vehicles of VIPs in the union territory, days after the directions were passed in this regard by Lieutenant Governor Brigadier B D Mishra.
Additional Director General of Police, Satish S. Khandare, took to Twitter to announce the ban.
“Ladakh Police bans the use of Siren/ multi toned horn by the Motorcade/Escort vehicles of VIPs in U.T Ladakh,” he wrote.
He said that sirens will only be allowed in cases of extreme emergencies and for the movements of Hon’ble President of India, Hon’ble Vice President of India, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, and Hon’ble Home Minister of India.
Khandare further stated that necessary departmental and penal action will be taken against any defaulters who violate this rule.
This decision has been welcomed by the public and is being seen as a positive step towards promoting responsible use of motorcade/escort vehicles and reducing noise pollution in Ladakh.
“Ladakh Police takes a step towards reducing noise pollution and inconvenience to locals by banning the use of sirens by VIP escort vehicles. Let’s respect the peace and serenity of this beautiful region,” wrote a local on Twitter.
Last week, while chairing the weekly review meeting of his administration, LG Mishra had issued instructions to Ladakh Police asking it not to cause any inconvenience to the public by stopping the flow of traffic during the passage of any elected representative or government official, including the LG himself.
“Ensure that sirens and escorts are only provided to those who are entitled to them as per the Supreme Court Protocol,” the LG had said in the meeting.
