LEH: The work on as many as 50 road projects sanctioned under the third phase of the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana (PMGSY) in Ladakh will be commencing soon, in both Leh and Kargil districts, even as the gratitude and salutations have been flowing from Ladakh to New Delhi.
The union government had recently sanctioned as many as 50 road projects under the third phase of the Prime Minister Gram Sadak Yojana, spanning over the total length of around 419 kilometres for both Leh and Kargil districts during a meeting held by the Empowered Committee (EC) meeting held at New Delhi.
Twenty-three of these projects are in Leh district spanning over almost 209 kilometers while 27 road projects spanning over 210 kilometers will be undertaken in Kargil district at a cumulative cost of Rs 490 Crore.
On Wednesday, the Superintending Engineer PMGSY Circle Ladakh forwarded the final lists of the projects to both the Chief Executive Councillors of LAHDC Leh and LAHDC Kargil, as a pre-cursor to the beginning of the work on these projects.
“The CECs were informed about the projects so as to avoid the duplicity of the road projects. The work on these roads will start soon,” a senior official informed The Earth News.
Besides, providing connectivity, these all-weather roads with necessary culverts and cross-drainage structures, will connect the unconnected habitations as part of a poverty reduction strategy and ensure sustainable management of the rural roads network under the PMGSY, he added.
It may be mentioned here that the UT level Standing Committee for sanctioning and monitoring had approved these 50 upgradation road projects proposed under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana, PMGSY-III in August 2022.
The PMGSY-III envisages consolidation of the existing rural road network by upgrading existing ‘through routes’ and ‘major rural links’ connectivity habitation with ‘Gramin’ (rural) agriculture markets, higher secondary schools and hospitals in Ladakh.
