Leh: To observe Worlds AIDS Day, the Department of Zoology, Leh Campus, University of Ladakh (UoL) organized an awareness programme on HIV and AIDS in the conference hall of the campus, under the convenership of Dr. Mohd Hussain (Coordinator, Department of Zoology).
World AIDS is observed throughout the world on 1st December every year to show support for people living with and affected by HIV and to remember those who lost their lives due to AIDS.
Dr. Nawaz Ali Consultant Urologist, SNM Hospital Leh was the lead speaker and guest of honour at this occasion. The session was inaugurated by Vice Chancellor Prof S.K. Mehta. He also felicitated the guest with traditional Khataq. In his key note address, Prof Mehta stressed the need of organizing such awareness programme and also acknowledged the efforts of Department of Zoology for organizing such programmes. He also thanked Dr. Nawaz Ali for sparing time for the event.
Mohsin Ali, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology then give a brief introduction about the event. Ms. Yanchen (student of M.Sc Zoology 2nd Semester) and Rinchen Angmo (student of M.Sc Zoology 4th Semester) presented key facts about HIV and AIDS, its symptoms, and prophylaxis.
Dr. Nawaz Ali deliberated upon the historical evolution of our understanding about HIV and AIDS. He also focused on the importance of awareness among the people about AIDS and the Myths related to it. The talk was followed by an extensive Q&A session in which many question related to AIDS were asked by the Students and faculty members.
The session was concluded with formal word of thanks by Dr. Amjad Hussain, Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology. Symbolic ribbon was also distributed among the faculty and students to show solidarity with the people infected with HIV and those died due to AIDS. The programme was hosted by Ms. Padma Angmo (student of M.Sc Zoology 4th semester).
