Srinagar Oct 01 :- In a private school in the city, 13 children have been found infected with Hand, Foot and Mouth Disease (HFMD) ie Tomato Flu. After this the school has stopped the classes of Nursery and KG. Some more cases have come to the fore on Friday, they have been sent for investigation. However, the school claims that there is no confirmation about this disease yet.

In this regard, the Health Department has issued an alert to all the Chief Education Officers (CEOs) asking people to take precautions. According to the Health Department, Kashmir, so far only one private school has received reports of tomato flu infection.

The concerned officials have been directed to ensure that the protocol is followed. In August this year, the central government had directed all the states and union territories of the country to increase surveillance along with alerting them about this disease. Tomato flu is a highly contagious disease and is caused by a virus of the Enterovirus genus.

It spreads from one person to another. He told that the symptoms of this disease are blisters or sores in the mouth and rash on the hands and feet. Experts said that this infection can affect people of all ages, but it is more common in children under the age of 5.

Meanwhile, the District Surveillance Unit of the Health Department, Integrated Disease Surveillance Program, Srinagar, has issued an advisory in this regard asking them to take special care of cleanliness. In this advisory, it has been advised to keep infected children away from contact with non-infected persons and to avoid sharing toys, clothes, food or other items.

It has also been said in the advisory not to scratch or rub children or large ulcers who have been hit by tomato flu. Try to keep the patient hydrated by motivating the patient to drink plenty of water, milk or juice. There are currently no medicines or vaccines available to treat or prevent tomato flu.

Most cases in West Bengal

HFMD is a rapidly spreading infectious disease in children. In recent months, cases have been reported in Delhi NCR, Chandigarh including Tricity, Kerala and Karnataka. In many places, even sending children to school has been banned.

According to a research paper published in the Journal of the National Center for Biotechnology Information, the first case of this disease in India was reported in the year 2007. West Bengal has been reporting the highest number of HFMD cases.

After the advisory issued by the central government in August, for the first time in Kashmir, so many cases of tomato flu have been reported simultaneously. People have been told how to prevent infection. Precaution is the only defense for the time being.(AGENCIES)
