LG Mathur attends valedictory function of residential theatre workshop

Leh, Sep 27: The Hon’ble Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, RK Mathur, virtually attended the valedictory function of the 30-day residential theatre workshop organised by Ladakh Autonomous Hill Development Council (LAHDC), Leh and National School of Drama (NSD), New Delhi. Chairman, LAHDC Leh, Advocate Tashi Gyalson; Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal; Executive Councillor, LAHDC Leh, Stanzin Chosphel and Councillors; Advisor Umang Narula; Theatre Director and Designer, NSD New Delhi, Sandeep Bhattacharya along with faculty members from NSD and theatre artists from Ladakh were among those present in the function.

LG Mathur appreciated Hill Council Leh for taking the initiative to organise the theatre workshop and NSD New Delhi for conducting the 30-day residential theatre workshop. He called young participants from Ladakh talented and enthusiastic and appreciated them for learning the nuances of theatre and showcasing their talent on the stage in the form of drama and songs.

LG Mathur shared initiatives taken by the Administration and Hill Councils for the promotion, revival and strengthening of rich Ladakhi art, culture and heritage in the form of Nomadic Festival, Apricot Festival, Mamani Food Festival, Ladakh Zanskar Festival, etc. He informed about initiatives taken by the Ladakh Academy of Art, Culture and Languages (LAACL) to prepare a repository of folksongs, folklores and folktales for the preservation of the rich art and history of the region. He stated that efforts are being made by the Administration and Hill Councils to not only preserve the culture but also take steps to facilitate its further evolution and enrichment.

LG Mathur expressed hope for continued association with NSD New Delhi to make it more Ladakh-specific so that the Ladakhi youth can avail of its benefits. He stated that the Cultural Centre being set up in Ladakh would help in promoting theatre and film production in Ladakh along with providing a platform for aspiring and senior artists to showcase their talent. He informed about the plan to organise such theatres, workshops and film festivals at regular intervals to strengthen the cultural growth and also to promote these mediums in remote parts of Ladakh.

Chairman, LAHDC Leh, Advocate Tashi Gyalson, stated that the objective of the residential theatre workshop was to provide basic training to budding artists from Ladakh and expressed satisfaction over the outcome of the 30-day residential theatre workshop. He stressed the need to use theatre as a medium to raise awareness on social issues among the people of Ladakh. He also informed about various initiatives taken to enable talented artists from Ladakh to realise their potential. He suggested that NSD New Delhi may introduce a diploma course in theatre at the University of Ladakh.

Member of Parliament from Ladakh, Jamyang Tsering Namgyal, emphasised the need for conducting such workshops to provide a platform for talented artists from Ladakh to showcase their talent. He emphasised the need to utilise different art forms to become prosperous in daily life. He also informed about the upcoming Cultural Centre project in Ladakh.

Advisor Umang Narula appreciated the initiative taken by Hill Council Leh for organising the residential theatre workshop and providing a platform for artists from Ladakh to enhance their skills. He expressed hope to see theatre production with socially-relevant messages.

Theatre Director and Designer, NSD New Delhi, Sandeep Bhattacharya, informed about various workshops and activities organised by them to provide training to aspiring theatre artists from across the country. He apprised about the potential of theatre artists in films, TV and OTT platforms.

Programme Coordinator, Sonam Stobgais, who is an NSD graduate, shared his experience of training young aspiring artists from Ladakh.

The participants of the residential workshop staged a play titled Mi-ospa. There were music and dance performances by artists from Ladakh. The faculty members were felicitated while certificates were distributed among the participants.

Earlier, EC LAHDC Leh Stanzin Chosphel welcomed the guests while Dr Thupstan Norboo from LAACL Leh gave the vote of thanks.
