Pune Sep 05 :- Scientists from the Indian Council of Medical Research-National Institute of Virology have described the current surge of influenza A H1N1 (pdm09), also known as swine flu, as ‘seasonal predominance’ of the virus, which is unlikely to stretch for too long like SARS-CoV-2.
The scientists also confirmed that both viruses have continued to show neck-to-neck transmission, with H1N1 maintaining a marginal upper hand since July.
“Of late, the positivity rate of swine flu has started to go down like Covid, but this declining trend needs to sustain for a period of time,” said Varsha Potdar, senior scientist with the ICMR-NIV.
Scientists said they are tracking all viruses, given the festival rush. “We will have to monitor the situation as a lot of mingling is going on,” Potdar said. But unlike the sustained intermittent peaks of SARS-CoV-2 over the last two-and-a-half years, the current spike of influenza A H1N1 (pdm09) is mostly seasonal, they added. ‘pdm09’ is the designation given to the influenza A subtype H1N1 strain, which triggered the 2009 ‘swine flu’ pandemic.
