New Delhi Sep 03 :- As Congress passes through uncertainty over the leadership issue, many in the party believe there is a possibility that Rahul Gandhi will relent from his position and accept to contest the internal elections to be held by October.
After Rahul’s return from his overseas trip, party leaders are likely to persuade him to give up his reluctance about contesting the polls, and accept the reins of the organisation.
Rahul quit the post in May 2019 after the Congress decimation in Lok Sabha polls, and is said to have told the party that none from the Gandhi family will take the leadership.
While the party is abuzz with the talk that he will not return to the leadership perch, a source close to him refused to rule it out altogether.
“There are efforts on to persuade him as that is the only good solution for the party. His agreeing cannot be ruled out, but much will depend on how the Delhi rally against inflation on Sunday, and then the Bharat Jodo Yatra, go. Let’s see,” he said.
A senior leader said Rahul will walk the 150-day yatra from Kanyakumari to Kashmir, breaking briefly only for reasons of election campaign. “If he is filing nomination for party elections, he will take a day’s break for that,” he said, indicating the possibility.
Besides, Rahul will also be the main speaker at the Sunday rally at Ramlila Maidan.
Senior leaders like Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot, who is the non-Gandhi alternative for the party leader’s post, Mallikarjun Kharge and Salman Khurshid, have said that efforts to convince Rahul will continue till the last.
Interestingly, AICC secretary Vamshi Chand Reddy tweeted that he is a PCC member from Telangana and is hoping to sign Rahul’s nomination papers as a proposer.
