Srinagar, Aug 17 :- Jammu and Kashmir Pradesh Congress Committee (JKPCC) leaders on Wednesday welcomed the party high command’s decision to appoint former Minister Vikar Rasool Wani as president of the JKPCC.

In a statement senior party leaders said ”though a much delayed decision of the party high command, we still welcome it”.

They said Wani was picked up by the Party high command from the panel of four leaders, who were recommended by veteran party leader Ghulam Nabi Azad.

While welcoming the appointment of Wani the leaders vowed to make the party strong at the grass-roots level and assured all support to the new president.

The leaders also appealed to the party workers to gear up to make the Congress strong and vibrant.

The statement was issued by senior leaders G N Monga, Mohammad Anwar Bhat, Zahid Hussain Jan, Fayaz Ahmad Dar, A. R Magrey from Kanga, Nazir Ahmad Lone from Kupwara, Bashir Ahmad Sheikh and Abdul Rasheed Dar from Baramulla, Er Maroof from Shopian, Gul Sher Khan, Bashir Ahmad Khan and Imtiyaz Ahmad Khan from Srinagar.

The announcement by Congress to name a new president and constitute various committees triggered a storm when senior Congress leader Ghulam Nabi Azad declined the new role as chairman of the Congress campaign committee, party sources said.

All India Congress Committee (AICC) on Tuesday appointed former minister Vikar Rasool Wani as new president of JKPCC. The AICC also named Azad as chairman of the campaign committee and another senior leader Tariq Karra as chairman of the party’s Political Affairs Committee.

The AICC accepted the resignation of former president Ghulam Ahmed Mir who tendered his resignation on July 6, 2022. Mir served as JKPCC chief for eight years.

Vikar was considered Azad’s loyalist and the move was seen by many as pacifying the senior Congress leader who has been part of dissident G-23 group of the party. However, it did not turn out that way with Azad refusing to take over the new role. It is learnt that Azad has conveyed his decision to the party high command.

The announcement of appointing president has also triggered anger in a section of Congress leaders in J&K. Former lawmaker Abdur Rashid Dar resigned from basic membership of the party in protest against the appointment of a new president.
