New Delhi Aug 11 :- Defence minister Rajnath Singh Wednesday said his party colleague Union home minister Amit Shah suffered harassment by agencies under UPA but he endured the ordeal silently rather than raising a hue and cry about it.

“Investigation agencies harassed him so much. Shah went wherever probe agencies summoned him and never raised a hue and cry or launched an agitation ,” Singh said, in an apparent swipe a t Congress for its protests over the questioning of Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi by the ED in the National Herald case.

Shah’s life has been a laboratory and has had its share of bittersweet experiences, the defence minister said, noting his Cabinet col- league had to spend several months in jail — a reference to the Soh rabuddin Sheikh fake encounter case in which he was later acquitted by the court of all charges. “He kept his faith that truth would eventually come out. Every challeng e made him (Shah) stronger. Without being concerned about acclaim or ignominy, he walked the path of his duties. Rarely do we get an amalgamation of politics and spirituality but it i s in him. ” Singh said that PM Narendra Modi was also targeted, in a clear reference to the investigation and the charges the latter faced with regard to the Gujarat riots

The defence minister who was releasing “Shab- dansh”, a collection of Shah’s speeches on a variety of issues, described the home minister as “nepathya ke nayak” (leads while staying in the background) who has worked without any desire for credit and stuck to his duties despite a string of bad experiences.

Singh said several aspects to Shah’s personality such as his knowledge of Sanskrit and Hindutva-related issues ar e not known. “It will not be an exaggeration to say Shah is a backstage hero. He has no desire for credit. He remains in background and does so many big work for the government and the party and still gets time to study so much,” Singh said.
