Jammu Aug 11 :- Consumers may get costly electric shock in Jammu and Kashmir from September. The Electricity Regulatory Commission has completed the process of hearing from the public hearing on the proposal of the department to hike the electricity fare to the officials of the electricity department. Soon the commission can submit its final report to the government.
According to official sources of the Regulatory Commission, work is being done to finalize the report after considering the proposal to increase the average rate of 18 per cent per unit of electricity in all categories. Apart from Jammu and Kashmir, the new rates will also be applicable in Ladakh.
According to sources, last year the electricity department bought electricity worth 2946 crores, but only about 1476 crores revenue was received from electricity rent. Apart from this, the department has to bear a loss of about Rs.2003 crore, including power infrastructure repairs, employees’ salaries and other expenses. To overcome this loss, the department submitted a proposal to increase the electricity fare to the Electricity Regulatory Commission in May 2022.
If the Regulatory Commission fully approves the proposal of the Electricity Department, then the annual revenue of the department will increase by about Rs 412 crore.
In the proposal of hike in electricity fare, there may be an increase of Rs 2 up to 100 units and Rs 5 up to 400 units. The rent from one kilowatt to two kilowatts in unmetered areas was earlier Rs 650, which is proposed to be increased to Rs 800 per month.
In industrial areas with LT power supply, the rent per kilowatt was earlier Rs 3.5 per unit, which may increase to Rs 5 per unit.
The Jammu Power Development Corporation Limited has completed the process of meeting with the Commission and the stakeholders under the guidelines of the Regulatory Commission on the proposal of hike in electricity fare. The Jammu and Kashmir and Ladakh Electricity Regulatory Commission has to take the final decision on the fare hike.(AGENCIES)
