Thiruvananthapuram Aug 01:- Health minister Veena George has said that the death of a 22-year-old youth in Thrissur on Saturday, suspected to be owing to monkeypox, will be probed as he was tested positive for the disease in the UAE and authorities were not informed about it on time.
The youth had returned from the UAE on July 21 and he was admitted to the hospital only on July 27. His swab samples were sent for tests again here as he had all symptoms of monkeypox and the result is expected soon. His relatives had informed authorities about him testing positive for the disease in the UAE only on Saturday, she said.
“This particular variant of monkeypox is not as highly virulent or contagious like Covid-19, but it does spread. Comparatively, the mortality rate of this variant is low,” the minister said.
It is learnt that he was brought to the hospital after he collapsed while playing with some of his friends. “A high-level team will probe why the patient had not taken treatment soon after he reached the state. It should also be probed why his positive result was kept hidden from the district health administration,” Veena said.
