Kathua, March 08: District Administration Kathua organized a mega programme to mark the International Women’s Day at Government Degree College for Women. Women from all walks of life besides women achievers, NCC and NSS volunteers participated in large numbers.
The programme was organised by the Kathua unit of the Social Welfare Department in collaboration with Nari Shakti Jagran Manch, Kathua.
DDC Chairperson Kathua, Mahan Singh, who was the chief guest on the occasion kick started the proceedings of the programme by lighting the traditional lamp.
While speaking on the occasion, the DDC Chairperson Mahan Singh said that the present dispensation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi has taken landmark decisions to uplift the women in every field. He said Indian women are achieving new heights and shouldering responsibility with male counterparts. He said with the functioning of Panchayti Raj System in Jammu & Kashmir, women are playing a big role in changing the development landscape of rural and urban areas.
Vice Chairperson, DDC Raghunandan Singh urged upon the students and others present on the occasion to spread maximum awareness among the masses regarding the rights of women folk as enshrined in the constitution.
Advocate J&K High Court Deepali Arora stressed upon creating awareness amongst the women regarding their rights and responsibilities as a means to empower them. She emphasized upon opening of legal aid clinics at institution level wherein those in need can avail free legal aid. She said on creating information dissemination with regard to legal rights but they should not be misused against innocents. She stressed upon striking a balance between rights and responsibilities so that it will pave the way for empowerment of women in real sense.
On the occasion, a scintillating cultural programme was presented by college girls. A felicitation ceremony was also organized to reward the meritorious girls and women achievers in different fields.
Chairperson, Nari Shakti Jagrati Manch, Kathua Sushma Mahajan while speaking on the occasion highlighted the role of society in general and administration in particular to uplift and empower the women to maintain social equilibrium in the society. She advocated the need for organising such programme wherein a platform could be provided to highlight the issues concerning women ensuring the acknowledgement of their efforts and achievements.
The event concluded with vote of thanks by DSWO Kathua Abdul Raheem followed by presentation of souvenirs to all the dignitaries present on the occasion.
