Leh, January 31: The Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, R K Mathur called upon the Minister for Textiles, Smriti Irani in New Delhi yesterday.
During the meeting, the Lt. Governor apprised the Minister about the need to develop and promote local handicraft and handloom sectors in Ladakh that has great entrepreneurial scope for the local youth. He informed her about the new vision to develop Ladakhi Pashmina as a luxury product with a strict check on any kind of pilferage. He stressed on the need for local Pashmina to get international certification, to make yarn weaving and production of finished products involving renowned designers to give a fillip to the Pashmina industry in Ladakh. The LG also spoke about the high quality of sheep, goat, yak and camel wool in Ladakh and requested for their processing and product development and a testing facility for the same.
The Minister assured that she would extend all possible help to augment the pashmina and textile industry in Ladakh. She suggested establishing a department related to craft and textiles in the University of Ladakh and gave assurance to take up the issues discussed with the concerned Secretary. The Minister also urged the LG to focus on women and child welfare, their rights and various schemes for their benefit
