Leh, January 20: In a message to the people of UT Ladakh on the Road Safety Month, the Lt. Governor R K Mathur said that this year, the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways is organizing Road Safety Month from 18th January ti 17th February 2021 pan India. He said that during the month for the celebration of this campaign, a variety of programmes like seminar, workshops, online speeches/ painting/ photography contests, road shows, eye check up camps of drivers and activities related to road safety will be organized in various parts of UT Ladakh.
Mathur stressed that road safety should be a concern of everybody. “Thousands of people lose their lives and millions suffer injuries in road accidents every year in India. Ladakh is no exception and even more prone to road accidents due to its topography. On an average 80-100 persons lose their lives in road accidents due in a year in Ladakh,” said the LG.
He added, “The aim of Road Safety Month is to sensitize people to the importance of the issue, reduce road accidents and inspire people to take actions on road safety. Educating all stakeholders including traffic police, drivers, school children, transporters, vehicle owners and citizens of road safety measures is thus crucial to save millions of lives and prevent injuries.
On the occasion of Road Safety Month, LG Mathur urged the people of Ladakh in general and transporters in particular to spread the concern of road safety and urge the people to wear helmets, use seat belts, get regular check up of vehicles done, follow traffic norms and avoid road rage. He also appealed to the people to participate in the activities of Road Safety Month actively.
