Srinagar, May 04: A truck conductor was killed as avalanches hit his truck in Drass area of Kargil along 434-km Srinagar-Leh national highway on Monday evening.

An official told  that a mini truck bearing registration number JK16-9189 was coming from Sonamarg towards Kargil when it rolled down after being hit by an avalanche near Shaitani Nala, Drass, in which some people got trapped.

A joint rescue operation by police and civil administration was immediately launched and later body of the conductor was recovered from the spot while remaining people were rescued alive.

The official identified the deceased conductor as Towseef Ahmad Mir son of Gulam Muhammad Mir, a resident of Aari, Goripora, Kangan area of Ganderbal.

After completion of medico-legal formalities, the body of the deceased has been handed over to his relatives for last rites, the official told. “A case under relevant sections of laws has been registered in this regard,” he said.
