Baramulla, May 03: Several live mortar shells fired from across the Line of Control (LoC) in Tillawari village of Uri in north Kashmir two days ago are yet to be defused, posing threat to the lives and properties of residents.

On Friday, India and Pakistan resorted to cross-border shelling in Hajipeer sector of Uri. Two soldiers were martyred in the shelling and as many others suffered injuries. Four civilians including a minor girl also sustained injuries.

According to locals, many shells landed in the village. “Three are still unexploded live shells,” said Mohd Hanief Awan, sarpanch of Tillawari village.

“One shell is stuck at a cowshed which belongs to Waheed Ahmad Mir while another two are lying in the locality,” he said.

Meanwhile, five live mortar shells are lying in Chrunda village along the LoC since December last year and are yet to be destroyed.

Sarpanch Chrunda Lal Din Khatana told that “one shell is lying in Panchayat Gar and other four are lying in the locality”.

Khatana said he had already informed the administration about these live shells but to no avail.

The local residents of these areas have appealed to the police authorities and officials from the administration including Deputy Commissioner and SDM concerned to get them defused at the earliest so as to avoid any loss of life and property.

SDM Uri Reyaz Ahmad said: “I will get it checked on the ground first and will take up the matter with the concerned authority for destroying these unexploded shells”.
