New Delhi, Dec 04, TEN Network | The Union Cabinet, on Wednesday, cleared the Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB). The contentious bill which seeks to provide Indian citizenship to Hindus, Christians, Parsis, Jains, Sikhs and Buddhists fleeing religious persecution from Pakistan, Bangladesh and Afghanistan, will be tabled next week in the Parliament.
On Tuesday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah held discussions with representatives of student bodies from Assam and addressed the concerns of the groups regarding the controversial bill. The meeting was also attended by Assam Chief Minister Sarbananda Sonowal.
“I can’t tell you officially but there are indications that the Bill may be introduced in Parliament in the last week of winter session. There’s also a broad indication that the Bill will be discussed in the cabinet tomorrow,” Himanta Biswa Sarma, Assam Minister said on Tuesday.
“I think Citizenship Amendment Bill will come before the Parliament in a positive environment, I also hope that after listening to HM’s address and examining the draft of Citizenship Amendment Bill the remaining confusion will also go away,” he further said. (TN)
