Chennai: At least 15 persons died after a compound wall collapsed and damaged three houses in Mettupalayam in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore district on early Monday morning. The authorities have confirmed that the incident happened due to incessant rains that have wreaked havoc in the state. Search and rescue operations are underway at the incident site.

According to reports, the 15 persons were sleeping inside the houses when an adjacent wall collapsed and fell on the structures. The reason behind the collapse was the heavy rains that have lashed Tamil Nadu in the past couple of days.

The Tamil Nadu government has announced a compensation of Rs 4 lakh each to the families of those who lost their lives in the wall collapse.

Earlier on Sunday, heavy rains lashed many parts of Tamil Nadu and neighbouring Puducherry. In the wake of the rainfall over the last few days, schools across Tamil Nadu have been shut on Monday. Madras University and Anna University also postponed all exams that were scheduled to be held today.

On Monday, the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) predicted that heavy rainfall is likely to continue in the state for the next two days as well. The IMD said, “Due to convergence of strong northeasterly winds, the ongoing heavy to very heavy rainfall activity over Tamil Nadu is very likely to continue during next 2 days.”

“Heavy/very heavy rainfall is also likely to occur at isolated places over Kerala, Lakshadweep and coastal and south interior Karnataka during the same period,” added the IMD. (TN)
