Leh/Jammu, Aug 13 : The Indian Army on Thursday installed a 100-feet-high national flag at Padum, headquarters of Zanskar district in Ladakh, in a move aimed at promoting patriotism, national integration and civic pride among people in the remote region.
The towering tricolour, installed amid the picturesque Zanskar landscape, is visible from a considerable distance and is expected to become a prominent landmark for residents and visitors, a Leh-based defence spokesperson said.
The initiative was undertaken by the Army’s ‘Forever in operations division’ in collaboration with the civil administration of Zanskar district.
Along with installation of the flag, renovation and beautification works were also carried out around the site to improve its overall appearance and public environment, he said.
The initiative seeks to inspire the younger generation by reinforcing the values of unity, sacrifice and dedication towards the nation, while strengthening the sense of national integration among the people of Zanskar valley, spokesperson said.
Padum, situated at an altitude of around 3,670 metres, is known for its rich Buddhist heritage, monasteries and distinctive Zanskar culture and serves as the gateway to several remote villages and landscapes of the valley, he added.
The Army reaffirmed its commitment towards the welfare and development of border areas and underlined the importance of civil-military cooperation in promoting development and national integration.
It also expressed gratitude to the civil administration and people of Zanskar for their support and cooperation in successfully completing the initiative.
The installation of the tricolour is being seen as a symbol of the enduring bond of trust and mutual respect between the Army and the people of Ladakh.
