Declaration of District status is a new chapter in history of Sham: LG Mishra

Leh, Sept 03: The Lieutenant Governor of UT Ladakh, Brigadier (Dr) BD Mishra (Retd) attended a function organised by the District Administration along with Ladakh Buddhist Association Sham Unit Khalatsi at Khalsi to celebrate the declaration of Sham as a separate district.

Congratulating the people of Sham Area on the announcement by the Government of India of the creation of Sham as a separate district along with Nubra, Drass, Changthang and Zanskar, the LG stated that it is a new chapter in Sham area’s history.

He highlighted the issues faced by the citizens of Ladakh, especially those residing in remote areas, as they had to travel long distances to meet the district officials to address their issues.

He informed the gathering about his meeting with the Home Minister, Amit Shah to discuss the need for creating new administrative units in Ladakh for the convenience and benefit of the citizens of the region.

The LG highlighted the contribution and ‘gift’ from the Prime Minister Narendra Modi, in the form of the announcement of the creation of five new districts in Ladakh. He stated that a committee would be constituted and its members would hold meetings with the stakeholders and public to keep their needs and welfare in mind.

The LG highlighted two issues faced by Ladakh, i.e. the lack of doctors and administrative officers in the region. He stated that efforts are being made to engage more doctors by offering them lucrative salaries. He also stated that the UT Administration is committed to providing administrative officers in the new districts.

The LG stated that the creation of new districts will result in the development of better infrastructure and employment opportunities for the youth along with livelihood opportunities for the citizens of the new districts. He also stated that the creation of new districts will help in ensuring better facilities for the future generations.

Terming education and health as two of his main priorities, the LG stated that efforts will be made to improve both these sectors so that people have access to better education and health facilities. He also highlighted efforts being made to address all issues for the success of programmes such as the Back to Village Programme in Ladakh.

President, Ladakh Buddhist Association, Sham Unit, Khalatsi,  Tsering Norboo, expressed gratitude to the Prime Minister, Home Minister, Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh and Chairman and CEC of LAHDC Leh for their contribution to the declaration of five new districts in Ladakh, including Sham area. He informed that the new districts will benefit the people of Sham and provide job opportunities to the youth. He requested the LG to complete all formalities for the new districts at the earliest.

Norboo also raised several demands on the behalf of people of Sham area, including the upgradation of the Community Health Center (CHC) at Khaltsi to Sub-Division Hospital; sanctioning an Executive Engineer-headed PHE and Irrigation & Flood Control Department for Sham district; posting of a full-time Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) and Assistant Information Officer (AIO) for Sham district, etc.

Vice-President, LBA Women Wing, Kunzes Dolma requested the LG to include villages, which are currently under Kargil district such as Sapi, Mundik, Kukshow, Aryan village, etc. in Sham district.

Earlier, Councillor, Khaltsi,  Lobzang Sherap welcomed the guests while Councillor, Lamayuru, Dr Morup Dorjay gave the vote of thanks.

There were dance performances by students of Govt Higher Secondary School, Khaltsi; dance performance by artists from Khaltsi village; cultural performance by artists from Aryan village; dance performances by students of Lamdon Jamyang School and Moravian Mission School, Khaltsi.
